It’s Time to Start Thinking ‘Trunk or Treat’

Yes, it’s already that time of year! We are now in planning mode for our biggest community event of the year: Trunk or Treat 2024! The Peace Children’s Ministry is again collecting Halloween candy for this event, which will be held at 6pm Thursday, Oct. 24. We need lots and lots of candy! We served about 500-600 kids during last year’s event. Please bring bagged, individually wrapped candy to either Peace campus (church, K-8 school or Early Childhood Center) starting this Monday, Sept. 16. We will have more details as the event nears, but for now, please prayerfully consider how you can help us share the love of Jesus Christ with hundreds of community children and families at Trunk or Treat. In addition to donating candy, here are some other ways you can help:

MONETARY GIFTS: If you would prefer to donate money for the candy, please write a check to Peace Lutheran, indicating “Trunk or Treat” on the check memo line, and place it in the offering plate at worship services.
HOST A TRUNK: We need many cars for kids to visit while trick-or-treating in our Trunk or Treat event. Bible study small groups, businesses, families, Peace staff, teachers — anyone! If you have a vehicle (and a trunk), we’d love for you to join us. Arrive at 5pm to set up. Some candy will be provided, but we ask that trunk participants also bring at least two bags of candy with you. You dress up in costume, decorate your trunk and pass out candy. Make it fun — there are prizes! Click here to register your trunk.
VOLUNTEERS: If you don’t want to host a trunk, we still have many ways you can help at the event! Please consider helping during setup or teardown, help refill candy inside or outside, serve cider and doughnuts in the cafeteria, or more. If you want to help, we have a spot for you! Please volunteer here.

VLHS Grand Tailgate

Join Us in the Peace Tent at Sept. 20 Homecoming

Friday, Sept. 20, is homecoming at Valley Lutheran High School, and we are again celebrating with a Peace tailgate before the football game! Bring a chair, side dish or dessert to share (not required), and join us at the Peace Lutheran School tent when VLHS hosts its annual homecoming Grand Tailgate, parade and football game! Tell others what food you’re bringing here. The Peace Athletic Department will provide grilled hot dogs and bottled water. VLHS will provide inflatables and games for kids. Presentation of the homecoming court and crowning of the king and queen will be at halftime. The tailgate starts at 4:30pm. Come hungry, enjoy great fellowship, and watch the parade at 5:45pm. Kickoff is at 7pm as the VLHS Chargers take on the Huskies of Hemlock High School. Questions? Contact Peace Athletic Director Royden Pett at rpett@peacesaginaw.org.

Tailgate Parking: Please drop off any food, tailgate games and/or passengers in the unloading zone by the tailgate area and then proceed to the rest of the parking lot or the grass lot to the west of the driveway to park.
Stay for the Game: Game tickets at the gate are $5. Seating in the stands may be limited, so you’re welcome to bring lawn chairs into the game and find a seat around the track toward the end zones with other fans.
Celebrate All Week: VLHS will celebrate Homecoming Week on Sept. 16-21. You are invited to attend an athletic event throughout the week, and join us at Friday’s Grand Tailgate, parade and football game! The entire week’s events can be found here.

K-8 SCHOOL UPDATE

School Chapel

We were blessed to host two special visitors during this week’s school chapel on Wednesday. Mr. Travis Grulke, Superintendent of Schools for the LCMS Michigan District, gave the chapel message about how we feel when we make a mistake or do something we shouldn’t. Afterward, Mr. Kyle DeWees from Valley Lutheran High School gave us some very exciting news: Every student Grades 1-8 would be given a brand-new VLHS T-shirt to take home! To learn more about Mr. DeWees’ visit and the VLHS shirt, click the message at right. To watch this week’s chapel video, click here.

Next week: During school chapel next Wednesday, Sept. 18, we will host another special visitor. Mr. Joe Boway of the Liberian Children’s Ministry will give our message! This ministry may sound familiar, as it is our school’s recipient of first-quarter chapel offerings. That means that every cent given during the first quarter of the school year during school chapel will be donated toward helping build a school for children in Liberia! While, relatively speaking, the cost is quite low to build a school there – only $18,000 – we know we can’t do this alone. That’s why Peace is partnering with other Lutheran schools throughout our region to raise funds this quarter. In addition, Mr. Jon Frank and his father, George, have committed to matching chapel offerings up to $10,000. How exciting! Next week’s speaker, Mr. Boway, was commissioned in 2004 as a missionary to the people of Liberia, by New Life Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born in Liberia, West Africa, and came to the U.S. in 1990 due to the civil war in Liberia. Please accept our invitation to hear Mr. Boway speak, as you are always invited to worship with us during K-8 chapels on Wednesdays! If you can’t make it to chapel but would like to help the Liberian Children’s Ministry, click any of the links or donate at the address below. See a LCM newsletter here.

K-8 SCHOOL & EARLY CHILDHOOD

Patriot Day

Students and staff throughout Peace Lutheran School & Early Childhood Center were proud to wear their red, white and blue on Wednesday to mark our observance of Patriot Day. This is a day of remembrance observed every year on Sept. 11 in the United States to commemorate the lives of those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia, as well as those who perished when the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. May God cover those who grieve in His peace that surpasses all understanding. See more photos here.

Join Us for Donuts with Dad on Sept. 20

On Friday, Sept. 20, we will host our annual Donuts with Dads event at Peace Lutheran School & Early Childhood Center, brought to you by the Peace PTL. Dads – or any other VIPs or special adult guests of Peace students – are invited to the Lawndale Campus cafeteria starting at 7am for some yummy doughnuts, fun and fellowship to start your Friday off right with your favorite K-8 or ECC student(s). Plus, that day is our Camouflage Spirit Day! Pro tip: Our Donuts with Dads events are usually such big successes that there have been lines out the door the entire time. Get here early! See more photos from our 2023 Donuts with Dads event here.

Can You Help? We need more volunteers for this event – an easy opportunity for moms, and only one hour of your time! Please click here to volunteer. Questions? Email Peace PTL President Delilah King at ptl@peacesaginaw.org.

CHURCH NOTES

Tales from Alaska

Peace Women in Mission (PWIM) gathered Monday evening for food and fellowship during the potluck in the church (Adams Campus) downstairs parlor. The main program for the evening was presented by some of the team that traveled to Goodnews Bay, Alaska, to put on Vacation Bible School, Bible studies and more in July. The group included our own Family Life Ministries Director Mrs. Haley Cottrell and Peace fifth-grade teacher and Athletic Director Mr. Royden Pett. They showed many photos and described life in the small village of Goodnews Bay. Attendees verbally gasped when Haley listed the everyday costs of store items because the village’s remote location makes the delivery of food and supplies difficult. So, a big part of the villagers’ lifestyle includes hunting and fishing to help reduce the costs of living. They also told of how their annual visits to Goodnews Bay are helping the villagers help themselves. A new wellness center has opened since the 2023 trip. The stories were absolutely fascinating, and you still have the opportunity to hear them for yourselves. The Alaska mission team will present again this Sunday, Sept. 15, during the Growth Gathering between morning worship services in the Adams Campus gym, starting at approximately 10:15am. Grab a seat and learn about Goodnews Bay and how we are helping make a difference there by taking the Good News of Jesus Christ to their village. Pastor Erik was also on hand Monday evening to install this year’s PWIM officers. See more info about that below. See more photos here.

Great things are happening at Peace Lutheran! We’d love for you to worship with us! Join us at our blended casual service at 6:30pm Saturday at Peace Lutheran School (Lawndale Campus), 3161 Lawndale Road in Saginaw Township, or at our 9am traditional or 11am modern Sunday services at Peace Lutheran Church (Adams Campus), 3427 Adams Ave. in Saginaw. JOY in September

During our first JOY (Just Older Youth) experience of the new school year this week at Peace Lutheran Church (Adams Campus), our amazing group of retiree friends enjoyed being reunited after a long summer break! We heard a beautiful devotion by Jean Zessin about sharing the love of Jesus with others. We savored some salty snacks and enjoyed a riveting game of bingo with lots of fun prizes! SAVE THE DATE: Our next JOY gathering is 1-3pm Monday, Oct. 14, in the church downstairs parlor. All “older youths”/retirees are invited to join the fun. See more photos here.

You’re Invited to a Readers Workshop

By Rev. Erik Schmidt
Peace Lead Pastor

The most common fear is glossophobia: the fear of public speaking. Equally as terrifying for many is askedtoprayaphobia, which is a word I just made up to describe the fear of being asked to pray in front of other.

If you suffer from either of these fears, take heart! There is hope! I would like to help you with both, by training you how to read Scripture during worship.

We would like to bring back readers at the 9am traditional service on Sundays, but we also want to make sure that everyone is fully equipped and trained to read in worship before we do.

I will be hosting a Readers Workshop in the Adams Campus (church) sanctuary 6-7:30pm on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Anyone who has been confirmed (ninth grade and up) may participate – even if you don’t know yet if you want to commit to reading in worship or attend a different service than the 9am.

We will primarily work on what to do, how to read out loud, and practice reading in front of each other. Whether or not you ever read in worship, this process will make you more confident at speaking in front of others.

Even if you have read in the past, you must attend and complete this workshop in order to be scheduled. More workshops will be held in the future, and you are welcome to repeat a workshop if you don’t yet feel ready.

You do not need to bring anything in order to attend, unless you need glasses – then you should definitely bring those! Handouts will be provided, and the only other requirement is to be brave enough to try and be loving enough to be supportive of others.

Children’s Ministry: Sunday Bible Club (SBC)

In the Beginning

During Sunday Bible Club (SBC) this past Sunday at Peace, we opened our Good Book to the very beginning. We explored how everything began with God’s mighty hand! We learn in the book of Genesis that our God is so incredible that when He sets out to make something beautiful, He does it in a BIG way!

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light’ and there was light.” — Genesis 1:1-3

Our amazing God created the whole world in six days! And on the seventh said it was good! God’s creation:
In the beginning – God started creation

The first day – light was created
The second day – the sky was created
The third day – dry land, seas, plants and trees were created
The fourth day – the sun, moon and stars were created
The fifth day – creatures that live in the sea and creatures that fly were created
The sixth day – animals that live on the land and finally humans, made in the image of God, were created
By day seven – God finished his work of creation and rested, making the seventh day a special holy day

Our God did not create a world of chaos (or wacky craziness). He created a beautifully organized world of order and fulfilled every possible need we would have. Each day in His magnificent creation built upon the days before it. By the end of each day, more important ingredients were added to His grand design: sun, sky, earth, water, light … all of these things were ultimately needed for creating life in His beautiful Garden of Eden. Each piece was needed for this garden to be created. It was perfect. God created a beautiful garden for Adam and Eve to take care of, not a crazy reckless jungle. He gave them a lovely gift to care for. God’s gifts are good and perfect like He is. We can rest assured that God has always and always will take care of our needs just like He has since His incredible creation.

“Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.” – Genesis 2:19

To remind us of the beauty He created, the SBC kids all painted lovely animals inspired by all the animals God created with watercolor! There were so many animals to choose from, but the kids did an amazing job picking one to paint with their uniquely creative hands! Way to go, artists! We can’t wait to see you next time for more Bible adventures. Join us during the 9am traditional or 11am modern worship service at Peace Lutheran Church, 3427 Adams Ave. in Saginaw. See more photos here.

PEACE SCHOOL SPORTS

Cross Country
The Peace Cross Country Team did very well Saturday morning during its first meet of the season, the Trent Carter Invitational in Breckenridge. “It was chilly out, but everyone did their absolute best, and I am so proud of them,” said Peace Cross Country Coach Alyssa Witt. Peace eighth-grader Connor Kaul placed in the Top 20 for middle school boys and received a medal. You can catch the Peace Cross Country team in action closer to home this Friday, Sept. 13, at the Hawks Middle School Invite at 5:10pm at White Pine Middle School. Come on out and support your Peace Panthers! See more photos here.

Volleyball
The Peace Volleyball Team’s debut games were a vibrant display of enthusiasm and skill, marking an exciting start to their season. The gymnasium buzzed with energy as players took to the court, ready to showcase their hard work and dedication. Despite the inevitable jitters, the team demonstrated impressive coordination and determination, rallying with each set and point. Their coach’s strategic guidance and the team’s collective spirit were evident as they adapted to the flow of the game. The first matches were a mix of exhilarating highs and valuable learning moments, setting the stage for a promising season filled with growth and competitive spirit.

Soccer
The Peace Soccer Team’s first games of the season were a dynamic blend of excitement and intense action. Plaers were filled with a mix of nerves and anticipation. From the first whistle, the team exhibited a spirited performance, blending swift footwork with strategic plays. Though the opposition was fierce and the pace was relentless, the Peace players showed resilience and teamwork, adjusting quickly to the demands of the game. Each pass and kick illustrated their preparation and potential, and the supportive cheers from the sidelines fueled their drive. These inaugural matches were not just a test of skill but a promising glimpse into the team’s future successes.
