New This Weekend
Fall Sermon Series ‘Identified’ Will Help Us Define Who We Are
Peace Lead Pastor
Each year, Peace leadership chooses a theme verse that guides us through the school year, in all three “arms” of Peace Lutheran Ministries: church, school and early childhood.
This year, we chose Galatians 2:20:
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
We summarized the theme verse with this phrase: “Alive in Christ, Christ alive in me.”
We chose this because of the subject of identity. Identity is a key struggle in the world today. Who am I? Am I who I’m supposed to be? Sexual identity, gender identity, racial identity … this sort of “identity politics” is omnipresent in our culture, and it leaves people feeling lost and confused, struggling to find their own truth, their own voice, and their own sense of belonging.
Plus, it starts at an early age. The sexualization of everything in the media and the race to free people from what are perceived as religious and societal restraints has well-meaning adults doing everything they can to “catch” kids at an early age and encourage them to “find themselves.”
Who we are in relation to the world’s categories is second to who we are in Christ. If we can know that our primary identity in Christ is as a baptized child of God, then hopefully we can navigate the other aspects of identity that will arise – and do the same for others.
Starting this weekend, we will kick things off with a sermon series examining the issue of identity. We will ask the key questions: What am I? How am I? Why am I? Who am I? Each of those questions has an answer in God’s Word, which is why the series is titled “Identified.” We are God’s people, and each one of us has a calling – individually and together, as the Church.
This fall, join us for worship and be secure in your identity.

Peace Lead Pastor
The most common fear is glossophobia: the fear of public speaking. Equally as terrifying for many is askedtoprayaphobia, which is a word I just made up to describe the fear of being asked to pray in front of other.
If you suffer from either of these fears, take heart! There is hope! I would like to help you with both, by training you how to read Scripture during worship.
We would like to bring back readers at the 9am traditional service on Sundays, but we also want to make sure that everyone is fully equipped and trained to read in worship before we do.
I will be hosting a Readers Workshop in the Adams Campus (church) sanctuary 6-7:30pm on Wednesday, Sept. 18. Anyone who has been confirmed (ninth grade and up) may participate – even if you don’t know yet if you want to commit to reading in worship or attend a different service than the 9am.
We will primarily work on what to do, how to read out loud, and practice reading in front of each other. Whether or not you ever read in worship, this process will make you more confident at speaking in front of others.
Even if you have read in the past, you must attend and complete this workshop in order to be scheduled. More workshops will be held in the future, and you are welcome to repeat a workshop if you don’t yet feel ready.
You do not need to bring anything in order to attend, unless you need glasses – then you should definitely bring those! Handouts will be provided, and the only other requirement is to be brave enough to try and be loving enough to be supportive of others.

Ringers & Singers: Handbells, Choir Return Tonight
Interested in handbells but have more questions? You are invited to our Handbell Meet & Greet tonight from 6-6:45pm in the church sanctuary. This is for anyone who has ever wanted to try their hand at ringing bells. Everyone will get to ring, try out different bells, learn basic techniques, and even play some beginning level music together. It is an opportunity to learn more about what is involved in being part of a handbell ensemble, ask questions, and meet current ringers. Regular rehearsals will begin Sept 12.
If you are interested in handbells, choir or being an instrumentalist for special music, please contact Traditional Music Director Carol Armbrecht at carmbrecht@peacesaginaw.org or 793.9025, ext. 310.

Family Life Ministries
All Ages Invited to Sept. 23 Pray & Paint-a-Palooza
The Sun & the Moon
Peace Children’s Ministry’s Sunday Bible Club (SBC) is back in action, and we are thrilled! This past Sunday, we learned that in the book of Genesis, our God is so amazingly powerful that He didn’t need special tools to create light or the sun and moon. He simply had to say it, and it was done. Isn’t that incredible? His words are so powerful! Have you ever stayed outside after it gets dark to look at the moon and stars? Aren’t they beautiful? Our God did that, and it is so good. There’s nothing our God can’t do.
“So God made the two large lights. He made the brighter light to rule the day. He made the smaller light to rule the night. He also made the stars.” – Genesis 1:16
To remind us of God’s infinite creative abilities, we painted our own sun and moon using a fun sponge method. Every time you look up into the big vast sky, don’t forget that our amazing God loves you so much!
We can’t wait to see you next time at SBC! Join us during the 9am traditional or 11am modern worship service at Peace Lutheran Church, 3427 Adams Ave. in Saginaw. See more photos here.

Church Extension Fund
Now is the time of year many parents are filling freshman pockets or thinking about their student’s future plans. How about getting a CEF ExtensionPlus Debit Card? Opening an ExtensionPlus Account is a great way to provide savings dollars for college students with easy access to funds. For 18-year-olds, this is a perfect solution. Parents can give college students a fixed budget (there is no credit associated with the card), and the entire family participates in the ministry of Church Extension Fund. Your account will be earning competitive rates of interest while building places for the Gospel of Jesus Christ to be shared. For more information, contact Peace congregation representative Jerry Hensler at 792.9108 or call CEF toll-free at 800.242.3944.

In Our Prayers at Peace
for the Persecuted
The island nation of Sri Lanka off the eastern coast of India has never fully recovered from a civil war between Buddhist and Hindu factions that ended more than a decade ago. In addition to the Buddhist and Hindu factions, about 10% of the population is Christian, and they are openly able to gather and worship. There are strong churches as well as para-church organizations that provide Bible training, theological education and missions training. Churches also are actively sending missionaries to other countries in South Asia. However, Buddhists are the primary persecutors of Christians, and Hindus also oppose evangelism and conversion to Christianity. Please pray for all the believers in Sri Lanka that they would stay faithful, that they would be good witnesses to the Buddhist and Hindu populations, and that God would bless their faithfulness.
